You make a very good point about the metronome imposing a given speed and this is an advantage of Giraffe.
On the other hand, Giraffe has several drawbacks:
• the statistical distribution of letters has nothing to do with normal prose,
• the letter-by-letter nature of the game forces too much eye movement,
• too much time is spent distinguishing I (capital i), the letter l (lower case form of L) and the digit 1.
My idea of a Fitaly training game is closer to the game of Tetris: There are words falling and you must type them before they disappear. Just as in Giraffe, there are levels and they fall faster at the expert level. So we get the metronome effect.
The advantage is that seing words, you have much less eye movement. You can read a word or several words and then type them. Moreover, we can select words that are statistically meaningful.
Below is a sketch of what FitalyLetris could look like.

Since the goal is to familiarize with the letter layout, it is not necessary to show digits and other symbols. In the form shown here, it should be possible to play the game by tapping either on the on screen Fitaly pattern or on the FitalyStamp.
I am currently trying to find a developer for this game. Starting from an existing Tetris game should allow using the basic game mechanics.
