We are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of a FitalyStamp model for the Kyocera 7135. We are expecting to get the stamps back from the printer around November 20, 2003. As shown in the pictures below, this is a standard FitalyStamp and it fits very nicely over the Graffiti area:

The picture on the left shows the machine in hand. It is slighly smaller than an m100 (but thicker). Altogether, the feeling is that of a Palm device with a phone capability. (In contrast, the Samsung i500 looks more like a phone with a Palm capability.)

The Graffiti area has a normal height and there are even two neutral strips, above and below the part of the Graffiti area that is reactive to taps. The challenge in doing a FitalyStamp came from the width, which is narrower in pixels than the screen width: Instead of the normal 160 pixel width, the Kyocera 7135 only reacts to taps from pixel number 8 to pixel number 145.

Adapting FitalyStamp to the Kyocera, required reducing the width of the green Side Bar, that of the Left Panel, as well as the width of keys of the Letter Panel. As you can see in the images, letter keys have a square form instead of the rectangular form used in other models of FitalyStamp, where the width is larger than the height.

The net result looks surprisingly similar to other FitalyStamp models. Reducing the width of the Side Bar and the Left Panel does not hurt as these are large areas. In addition, the square form of the letters does not appear to affect acuracy and speed. This impression is confirmed by the larger image on the right.

This adaptation also required an adaptation of the FitalyStamp 3 software to handle the new column positions. (We expect to put this new version on the Fitaly site in a few days.) As you will see, the installation loads an additional (pdb) file, containing column positions.

Using FitalyStamp on the Kyocera 7135 is very similar to using it on other machines as the keys are only slightly smaller. I have found it to be as fast and accurate. Resting the fingers holding the pen on the phone keys was not a problem and it was easy to maintain the center position for the pen. The narrower keys even reduce pen travel without affecting accuracy.

My own experience of a few days with the Kyocera 7135 is that it is an impressive machine and I believe that FitalyStamp will be a nice complement for writing email on this device.
