A slick trick for inserting the degree symbol (or other symbols)
(MT’s typing orthopedic accounts will appreciate this tip.) Go to Insert/Symbols. The Symbol dialogue box will open. If necessary, change the font to the current font. Look carefully at the list of symbols (they are small and hard to distinguish) and locate the degree sign. Click the symbol and it will enlarge (this will help confirm that you have selected the correct symbol). When you have located the degree symbol, click the AutoCorrect button in the lower left corner. The AutoCorrect dialogue box will open with the degree symbol already placed in the “With” box. In the box labeled “Replace” type a shortcut for the degree symbol. I choose the key just to the left of the number 1 (with the accent symbol and the tilde ~. Since the degree symbol always follows numbers and my fingers are already up on the number keys, this key works well.) Click Add. Close the dialogue box. When you type a number and immediately follow it with the shortcut key (the ‘accent’ key as in the example above), AutoCorrect will insert a degree symbol instead. Voila! (When you close Word, you may be asked to save changes to the Normal.dot. Answer Yes).
